| Everybody knows that the Koran is the cardinal book for the Muslim faith. The Muslim religion has no priestly class as each faithful connects directly with God. This is (indirectly) why Arabic writing and fonts have such a built-in aesthetic appeal. The writings about the teachings of God must be expressed in the most suitable and beautiful font (i.e. calligraphy). The first Arabic font was called ‘Kufic’, named after the town in Iraq where it originated. Three hundred years after the death of Mohammed the Prophet) a new font was developed, called ‘gliding Kufic’. More fonts were later developed. We can say that Islamic fonts almost create images out of words. For a long time, the word of the (Islamic) God was deemed too noble to be printed. In fact the first printed (known) version of the Koran was printed in……..Venice in 1537. Even more curiously, this version of the printed Koran was discovered by chance in the 1980s by Friar Vittorino Meneghin. He discovered the Koran while cataloguing the 23,000 plus books of the monastery library. |
