| The long road to the fonts in your ink printing machine. First there was the 'pictograph', where a word was represented by the thing itself. With time pictographs became unwieldy, as there could be as many 'pictures' as there are words, about 75,000 just in English, but alltogether maybe 200,000 as many words have several meanings. The next step was a sound abbreviation of the vowels-consonants originally represented by the pictographs. From a dictionary of pictures we pass then to a sound data base of syllables, called the 'syllabary'. This is the case, for example, of the ancient Maya culture. The next and final step (until today at least) was the separation of the vowel-consonant combinations into separate vowels and consonants, which is our alphabet. |
