| First there was the 'cuneiform' writing (font and alphabet all in one). Cuneiform' derives from a Latin word meaning 'wedge' because writers wrote with a stick shaped like a wedge on a damp clay. The next font/alphabet was created by the Egyptians, and is known as 'hieroglyphic'. Hieroglyphic is a Greek word meaning ‘sacred writing’ or, if you like’ ‘language of the Gods’. With the hieroglyphic font and alphabet, writing becomes an art, the art of calligraphy (‘calligraphy’ is also a Greek word compounded of ‘kalos’ = beautiful and ‘graphein’ = to write). It could be argued that cuneiform writing has an equal aesthetic appeal, but Hieroglyphics had a dramatically expanded set of characters, compared to the cuneiform alphabet. Over 6000 characters of ‘glyphs’ have been catalogued. In the Egyptian font a letter, for example, would be represented by an animal, another by a flower and combinations of letters and sounds, yet by other objects. |
